A 3 session 13-hour Series for individuals in management or professional roles with no board experience who are interested in joining a not-for-profit board. Individuals who have completed the Introductory Series will have the opportunity to choose whether they would like the Council to make their names available to select not-for-profit organizations.
Day 1
Key Responsibilities and Decision Making
Learn about the importance of ethics and the distinction between ethics and legal behavior. This course also outlines the various roles on a board, including the Board Chair, Committee Chair, and the Corporate Secretary. You will learn about the five key responsibilities associated with being a board member: (1) guiding or approving the organizational strategy, (2) determining the allocation of resources under uncertainty, (3) achieving performance, (4) understanding risk, and (5) being transparent about what the organization does and how it does it, and communicating key information to stakeholders.

Hear from experienced Directors about how boards operate and understand the distinction between oversight and management. In this module, we outline the fiduciary role of boards and prepare you to identify, manage and mitigate risk. We outline key considerations before joining a board and the due diligence process to find the right board for you.

Get individualized coaching from a professional coach and facilitator to develop your personalized action plan to achieve your board career objectives. Day 1
